the way i understand it is that when application wants to get exclusive control it uses WASAPI to talk to audio device. I type those in, and it says License Issued and allows me to play the video. I think I'm just going to stick with the 1995 Intel driver from the Asus install CD until I have a real reason to update. If you've got a new hard drive you can swap in, try replacing the old HD, put in the new one and see if you can then install Windows.
