I have not installed any other software in this partition, through fear of a conflict, and I am happy to report it is working fine. I have tried both wmv and mpegs. posts to newsgroups and forums are fairly regular in reports of Movie Maker 2 crashing immediately after opening after the upgrade, and reverting back to IE6 resolves it. If this was the solution, I was wondering how I would know which filter I would disable.

It goes down a list of 'registered' codecs in sequence from first to last (not the sequence in the lists shown here). turning off a codec that is interfering might be appropriate.
