The suggested work-around is to either rename or delete the "c:\windows\software distribution" folder after stopping the Automatic Updates and Background Intelligent Transport Services. This fix is also offered here, for a similar Windows Update problem. It's easy!

In fact when I check windows update history nothing shows up, not sp3 I just downloaded. Windows 10 Update Not Working Your BAT file resolved my problem after numerous attempts with Microsoft Fix-It. I haven't seen the 404 error, or the missing directory error at all.

Rebooted and went back into windows update, the same updates that I just installed manually are still listed and yes, they still failed to install using windows update. Your amazing and brilliant solution had me fixed in less than 5 minutes. What did work, on all three machines, was this: 1. Strangely enough, it would seem that the older (I think) Windows Update client still works, at least that is the case on my main computer running Windows XP x64. Has anyone else It didn't fix it.
