Not sure if I know what exactly fixed the problem but I concentrated on getting Windows Update to run. Although it's supposed to run in the background I gave it a Try ThisNow, all new PCs come with Windows Vista. This instructable is going to talk about how to "tweak" Vista to make it faster.
